Gunjan Saxena, born in 1975 into an army family, has had a lifelong passion for the army. After finishing her schooling in her hometown, she enrolled in Hansraj College, University of Delhi, and also joined the Safdarjung Flying Club. His childhood dream had been to join the Air Force, so he began learning the basics while staying at the Safdarjung Flying Club. He joined the Air Force as a pilot after successfully completing his studies in Sashastra Seema Bal.

There were 25 women selected as trained pilots in the Air Force at the time, in 1994. Gunjan Saxena was assigned as a pilot in the direction of Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir.
