Serena Williams has shared heartbreaking details about her near-death experience while giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia in 2017. Williams, 40, disclosed her pregnancy in April of that year, admitting she was eight weeks pregnant while winning the Australian Open.
Five months later, she had an emergency cesarean section due to the baby’s heart rate decreasing during labor, and she also experienced a pulmonary embolism after giving birth, which rendered her bedridden for nearly a month and delayed his return to training. She returned in late 2017 at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi, but did not compete in another Grand Slam event until the French Open in 2018.
Her victory at Melbourne Park was her 23rd major victory, one short of Margaret Court’s all-time record. Since her return, the American has reached two Wimbledon and two US Open finals, but she has yet to win a Slam to equal the Australian.
But now, the legendary player has revealed how lucky she is to have been able to return to tennis at all, after doctors first dismissed her cries for action after the birth. After discovering she had blood clots in her lungs in 2010, the actress realised something was gravely wrong in the hospital.
