India’s Nightingale Lata Mangeshkar is well-known for her singing abilities. The veteran singer, who passed away on Sunday, February 6, had more than 5,000 songs in 13 languages to her credit. However, few people are aware that Lata Mangeshkar began her career as an actress.
Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore to theatre performers and singers Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti.
Lata was not particularly interested in acting, but due to her father’s untimely death when she was only 13, she was forced to work in a few Hindi and Marathi films. At the age of 13, she got her first break in a Marathi film titled ‘Pahili Mangalaa-gaur.’ She played the younger sister of the main character, Snehprabha Pradhan. In the film, she also sang the song ‘Nataali Chatraachi Lavalai,’ which was composed by Datta Javadekar.
In 1945, she played a minor role in Master Vinayak’s ‘Badi Maa.’ Asha Bhonsle, her sister, also appeared in the film.
