Nikita Kaul, 29, joined the Army on Saturday after completing a year of rigorous training in Tamil Nadu, 27 months after losing her husband in an anti-insurgency operation in south Kashmir’s Pulwama.
Lt. Gen. Y.K. Joshi, Army Northern Commander, pipped the stars on her shoulders during a simple ceremony at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai and wished her the best of luck in her future endeavours.
Who is Nikita Kaul
Lieutenant Nikita Kaul, originally from Kashmir, had only been married to Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal for nine months when the news of him making the ultimate sacrifice for the country during a gunfight with Jaish-e-Mohammad militants turned her world upside down. The Major was one of five security forces personnel killed in February 18, 2019, encounter in which three JeM terrorists were gunned down, including two top commanders suspected of masterminding the deadly Pulwama suicide attack on a CRPF convoy.
Major Dhoundiyal was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his service to the nation. Motivated by her husband, Lt. Kaul passed the Short Service Commission (SSC) exam and interview last year and was sworn in as an officer at a ceremony presided over by Lt. Gen. Joshi, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command in Udhampur.
