Many states in India have taken steps like complete lockdown and strict restrictions to break the corona transition chain. Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Union Territory of Puducherry have announced statewide lockdown from 10th May, i.e. Monday, which will remain in force till 24th of May. Odisha had already enforced a 15-day lockdown in the state from 5th May.
Meanwhile, on 12 or 13 May, the festival of Eid is also going to be celebrated by the minority community.
The lockdown has come into effect from Friday (07.05.2021) evening in Karnataka and from Saturday (08.05.2021) morning in Kerala. At the same time, the lockdown duration has been increased in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin issued a statement saying there was no other option to prevent the spreading of infection except lockdown. On Friday, it was decided to review the situation in Corona with the District Magistrates and implement the lockdown based on the advice of health care experts.
All shops and private and government offices will remain closed except for essential goods and services. Government liquor shops, bars, spas, gyms, beauty parlours, salons, cinema halls, clubs, parks, beaches will also remain closed during this period.
Opposition parties AIADMK and PMK have welcomed the statewide lockdown. Party spokespersons said that this will help break the corona infection chain.
But the BJP, an ally of both these parties, has called the decision of the lockdown a hasty step. State BJP says that it has not taken any measures to help the daily workers and weaker sections. Nothing has been said about how the vaccination campaign will run during the lockdown.
The Rajasthan government has also declared a state-wide lockdown from May 10 to 24. Except for emergency services, all will be closed during this period. For a while now, grocery, milk, vegetable, fruit, and other vital goods stores have been permitted to open.
In Karnataka, the lockdown began on Friday evening, and in Kerala, it began on Saturday morning. Kerala will be subject to restrictions until the 16th of May. The infection is rapidly spreading in each of these states. Bengaluru has over three lakh active cases, making it the country’s first metropolis to cross the mark.
From Sunday, a 15-day curfew will be enforced in Goa also. Vegetable, liquor stores, drug stores, and milk stores, all are permitted to remain open from 7 AM to 1 PM.
