International Mother’s Day 2021: Mother’s Day is celebrated for motherhood and the relation between the child and the mother. This day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, the 9th May of this year.
A mother is the child’s first friend and first guru. It is the mother from whom the child learns all the things in his childhood. Therefore, this day of the year has been dedicated to every single mother who thinks of her child before her and wants to give happiness to her child till she dies.
Significance of Mother’s Day
The mother thinks about her children every day, and her whole day is dedicated to the betterment of her child. So not just one day, we should celebrate Motherhood 365 days. However, in this run-of-the-mill life, we often ignore relationships. So today is at least the day when we dedicate one day of our life to our mothers and thank her for her sacrifices.
Why it is celebrated
It is said that the celebration of Modern Mother’s Day first started in America. Huge credit goes to a woman named Ana Jarvis. In memory of her mother, she tried to start such a holiday in the US that would be dedicated to mothers. However, in the initial days, her proposal was rejected, saying that if we declare the day for a mother, tomorrow one can ask to declare the day for mother-in-law.
Jarvis’ mother passed away in 1905, and she had a heartfelt desire that one day there should be dedicated to mothers. So to fulfil her mother’s wish and honour all the Mothers, a mass memorial was organized by Jarvis in 1908 for her and other mothers. Although she did not reach that gathering herself. But she had sent a telegram and carnations addressing all the people who had come to that meeting.
A lot of florists supported her in this movement. But at that time, Jarvis did not an idea that all these florists are supporting her for their business interest. When Mother’s Day spread all over the USA and people started celebrating it, on the second Sunday of May, there was an increase in flower sale.
This practice started by her gradually started celebrating other people of the country as well.
Gradually Mother’s Day, which was started to celebrate the relationship between a mother and a child, was commercialized. Ana Jarvis, who started Mother’s Day, was also saddened by this. And she said that this is not the reason for which she had started the movement.
Mother’s Day is celebrated in around 97 countries on the second Sunday of May. In some countries, International Day is celebrated on 8 March, in some countries on 21 March and in some countries, the last Sunday of May is also celebrated on Mother’s Day. But Mother’s Day celebrated on the second Sunday of May is considered in most countries.
