Mumbai: On Wednesday, Sanjay Leela Bansali launched his upcoming movie Gangubai Kathiawadi on youtube and was watched by millions in a short period. But do you know the movie is based on a real-life character of the 60s?
Who was Gangubai Kathiawadi
The original Gangubai or Madam, known in Kamathipura, was one of the famous brothel owners who owned several brothels. She was considered the most powerful woman in Kamathipura, and people used to fear her.
Gangubai was also loved among the Kamathipura girls as she used to take good care of them. She had a principle of not forcing any girl into the flesh business unless she agrees by herself. The reason behind this was Gangubai was herself forced into this business without her consent.
Gangubai was borned in Kathiawad, Gujrat(then Bombay State) and was named Ganga Harjivandas. Later she got her name Gangubai Kathiawadi due to her place of origin. She had an affair with a boy called Ramnik Lal, who used to work for Gangubai’s father. Both eloped from their home and reached Bombay. But her boyfriend betrayed her and sold her for money in the flesh market.
Over time, Gangubai became a well-known name in Mumbai and owned several brothels. Reports claimed that she had strong connections with the underworld, as they were her clients. She held over certain portions of South Mumbai. Reports claim that she was the only brothel owner who used to possess a Bentley.
It is also reported that despite being the owner of several brothels, Gangubai had a soft spot in her heart for the girls who were forced into prostitution. Hence, she took great care of the girls working for her and never forced anybody to be a sex worker. In several reports, an incident is also mentioned wherein Gangubai fought with a gangster in Mumbai after learning that he had allegedly raped a girl in her brothel.
She had adopted a child as her son and his name is Babuji Rawji Shah.
