Corona continues to affect the world. It is also affecting people’s lives. But, unfortunately, Corona’s havoc has not subsided. The Asia Cup in Sri Lanka has also been called off after the Indian Premier League was postponed mid-way due to the rise of Covid positive cases in India.
It was announced by De Silva, CEO of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, that the Asia Cup would not take place in Sri Lanka because of the corona epidemic around the world and keeping player’s safety as a priority.
“Given the current situation, the tournament cannot be held,” he said. It was supposed to occur in Pakistan in September 2020, just before the scheduled T20I world cup.
But because of the Indo-Pakistani political bitterness, India did not agree to play in Pakistan. It was then decided to hold the tournament in Sri Lanka. But now it has been cancelled because of the corona. This Asia Cup was scheduled to play in the T20 format, keeping an eye on the upcoming T20I World cup.
The tournament can now be played only after the 2023 World Cup. However, the Asian Cricket Council, chaired by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, has not announced the series being postponed or cancelled.
Last Asia Cup
The last Asia Cup was held in 2018 in 50 overs format, which India won by defeating Bangladesh by 3 wickets. Apart from India and Bangladesh, teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Hong Kong also took part in the series. The tournament took place in UAE.
In the absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma led the Indian team to victory. Kohli missed the series due to his back issue during the England tour and thus was rested.
In 2016, India won the Asia Cup defeating Bangladesh by 8 wickets. 2016 Asia Cup was played in the T20 format as the 2016 World cup was scheduled just after the Asia Cup. Bangladesh hosted the tournament.
This would be the first time that Team India would play the Asia Cup led by Virat. The last time India hosted Asia Cup was in 1990/91 and since then India has never hosted any Asia Cup.
